It is not the intensity, but the duration of a high feeling that makes a high man. It is not that one second of pure ecstasy, but the drawn out ride on cloud 9 that is the essence of a happy man.
To what pain do you owe the pleasure of that one moment? To expend all of your energy for one moment seems silly. But it is that blind pleasure that seems to lure us to experience something of mammoth proportions, even if it is for a split second. Then to rewind it in our heads, until the potency diminishes, and we are left where we started. In search of that one moment.
But a wise man does not waste his time with instant pleasures. He does not search for one intense moment. Instead he lives life to the fullest in an everlasting moment of bliss. Though it is not as intense as another's moment, or as extravagant as others... it is his ever lasting happiness.
Sometimes the simple pleasures are the best ones. Sometimes the road to pleasure is the pleasure itself. Sometimes pain arises from those intense pleasures. All because we can not hold on to anything forever, unless it is forever itself.
